At Atlanta Tech Week, more than 100 entrepreneurs, angel investors and future investors gathered for Unlocking Community Angel Capital—and the energy in the room confirmed something I have believed for nearly two decades: the community is ready.
The video recap captures the enthusiasm of the day, but what matters most is what it points toward: a new way to think about wealth, entrepreneurship and local economic growth.
Entrepreneurs came because they know how difficult it can be to find the capital needed to grow. Angel investors came to share what they look for and why they invest. Others came because they were curious about a different question: Could investing in entrepreneurs be for me?
The forum was an opportunity to start the conversation with incubators, accelerators, economic development agencies, business organizations, and angel investor networks --- how do we grow the number of investors, identify the people in our community that want to invest with impact, and create shared prosperity in our community.
Far too long, the stakeholders reported to be on a mission to grow businesses and create jobs have neglected cultivating the other side of the table - investors to fund the launch and growth of those businesses.
This has led to more companies fail than succeed. Or after receiving support and resources from the community, they leave because they found their financing in a different city or different state.
Further, by excluding the middle class from investing the way the millionaire class has invested for generations, the wealth gap continues to grow. That wealth gap is greater and growing wider for the BIPOC and female sectors of our community because of lack of awareness that this type of investing is available, how to do it, and where to find the qualified companies.
The events at Atlanta Tech Week was the starting point for a great shift in the paradigm of how businesses succeed, wealth is created and shared, and economic resilience is possible.
