Just 1.2% of the record $137 billion invested in US startups in the first half of 2021 went to Black entrepreneurs, and only 2% went to women-founded companies, according to a blog post from Crunchbase.  If you aren't familiar with the challenges non-white, non-male founders of startups face getting capital in the United States, these numbers are actually better than they have been in the past.  Significant advancement for the commitment of funds from Corporate Venture Funds and Angel Investor Groups to cultivate and invest in minority and female led ventures began in 2021.  For many of us that have been involved in advancing the challenges these diverse founders face when it comes to raising capital this was a welcome change and long over due.  The statistics are not a secret and simply were ignored by the capital community for decades, dismissing them with excuses like there weren't black entrepreneurs and female founders involved in tech or scalable businesses.  That finally began to change when the BLM marches became a catalyst for the community discussions about the decades of systemic racism and racial bias  which had contributed to 10X wealth gap between white and black households and the shut out that many of these diverse founders faced trying to get access to the COVID relief capital for small business owners.  Zane Ventures is not new to the party, but they are using this awareness momentum to be a disrupter in the capital market place.  Through their Zane Access program they have mentored 1200 startups with diverse founders.  Zane has connected many companies with capital that has led to combined revenue of $7 M and countless jobs.   With the launch of their venture fund they are able to invest in bold founders who have innovative business models and are building early-stage technology solutions with early traction, whether in dollars or data.

Shila Nieves Burney is the Founding & Managing Partner of Zane Venture Fund.   Zane mentors and invests EARLY, reducing barriers for diverse founders to reveal their talents and reshape our communities.
